Lean manufacturing for a DevOps engineer

Today, while actively prepping for tomorrow's talk at the meetup, I want to kick off our series from manufacturing automation to DevOps and share with you the core principles of Lean Manufacturing and how they can be useful for us, DevOps engineers. 🌟
Let's go through the main principles of this system, looking at analogies with a simple software product and coffee production at a plant (I actually used to work there):
1. Identifying and defining customer value 💡 What matters to users? Find out and do exactly that.
- Software product: A new feature that lets users like cat photos.
- Coffee production: Making quality, aromatic coffee, the kind with a bit of acidity that makes you go "wow."
2. Eliminating waste 🚫 Get rid of everything the customer doesn't need.
- Software product: Refactoring code, removing clutter, making things simpler.
- Coffee production: Simplifying logistics, distributing goods to warehouses closest to customers.
3. Creating value flow 🌊 Make the work continuous and smooth, without downtime.
- Software product: Building pipelines, building code on every commit, deploying with zero downtime.
- Coffee production: A conveyor that fills empty cans with coffee, screws on the caps, stamps the logo, and packs them into boxes, all done by robots.
4. Pulling the product from customers 🔄 Work based on real customer needs, not guesses.
- Software product: Building only the features customers actually need.
- Coffee production: Making coffee to demand, stocking warehouses on demand.
5. Striving for perfection 🎯 Continuously improve the product and work processes.
- Software product: Retrospectives and meetings are everything!
- Coffee production: Improving roasting technology and exploring new varieties.
To sum up, lean manufacturing and DevOps are closely connected through shared principles: creating customer value, eliminating waste, and striving for perfection. Bringing these principles into your work helps build a strong culture of continuous improvement and harmonious collaboration between teams. Good luck! 💪
